How to become a Digital Nomad – Jobs, Requirements, and Best Places to Stay (2023)

Digital Nomad Post

In the digital age, work has undergone a radical transformation, revolutionizing working life as we knew it and driving new ways of working. “Digital nomads” are the protagonists of this transformation, and their lifestyle has become a constantly growing trend.

If you are interested in learning more about this lifestyle, don’t miss this article about the growing trend of digital nomads and how they are redefining the way we think about work and life.

What is a digital nomad?

Digital nomads are professionals who leverage technology to do their work remotely, allowing them the freedom to choose where and when they work.

However, being a digital nomad is not just a job, but also a lifestyle.

This lifestyle provides unprecedented freedom in terms of choice of location and schedules, allowing professionals to live and work according to their own preferences and needs. This freedom not only gives them greater flexibility, but also the opportunity to experience and immerse themselves in a wide variety of environments and cultures, thus enriching their perspective and skills. Being a digital nomad is, in essence, finding a balance between work and personal life.

What jobs do digital nomads have?

Although digital nomads have the same common link: working through the Internet, not all of them follow the same work modality. Depending on the type of work, they are classified into the following types of digital nomads:

    • Freelance digital nomad: This profile is characterized by working on your own and selling your online services to different clients or projects. Their autonomy gives them the flexibility to choose the jobs they want to do and set their own schedules, allowing them to adapt to different situations and environments.
  •
    • Entrepreneurial digital nomad: Entrepreneurial digital nomads are those who have created and run their own online businesses. They can develop products or services, manage ecommerce, blogs, create digital agencies, develop applications and software, among others. This group of digital nomads is characterized by their entrepreneurial spirit and their ability to carry out projects autonomously.
    • Employed digital nomad: Unlike the previous ones, employed digital nomads work for a company, in roles that allow them to perform their tasks remotely, being able to perform their functions from anywhere with internet access.

Some examples of jobs and professions that allow you to be a digital nomad are: Content creator, programmer, graphic designer, blogger, digital marketing consultant, text writer, community manager…

What does it take to be a digital nomad?

To become a digital nomad, it is essential to have skills and knowledge in the technological field. On the other hand, you should investigate whether your profession can be practiced over the Internet. If this is not the case, consider undertaking a digital project or training to acquire new skills that are compatible with this lifestyle.

In addition, you will need certain skills and personal qualities such as flexibility, creativity, adaptability to change and problem solving. It is important that you can collaborate with different profiles of people from anywhere in the world.

Where to process the digital nomad visa in Spain?

The digital nomad visa is a permit that allows non-EU citizens, who work remotely, to work and live in Spain, granting them residence for a certain period.

However, not everyone can apply for a digital nomad visa in Spain. To verify that all those who apply for it really come to the country for work, the Government has established very strict requirements:

  • Have no criminal record in the last 5 years.
  • Prove that you are an investor, entrepreneur, highly qualified professional, researcher, intra-corporate transfer worker or international worker.

Additionally, depending on the type of digital nomad, the following requirements apply to obtain the visa:

  • Entrepreneurs must carry out an innovative entrepreneurial activity or one that has special economic relevance for Spain.
  • International employees (or teleworkers from foreign companies) will have to:
    • Be graduates of universities, professional training courses or business schools of recognized prestige or have work experience of more than 3 years.
    • Prove that the company you work with has been active for more than a year.
    • Demonstrate that they have been working with your company for more than three months (and that it allows them to work remotely from another country).
    • Demonstrate that your work can be done remotely.
  • Self-employed digital nomads must demonstrate that they can do their work remotely and must primarily work for foreign companies. They can only invoice 20% of their work in Spain.
